Julia Cocuzza
Julia Cocuzza was born and raised in Reading, Pennsylvania. After earning her B.F.A. from Syracuse University’s College of Visual & Performing Arts in 2003, she moved to New York City and soon after to Brooklyn, where she currently works and resides. In 2008, she received an honorarium from Alvernia University and was granted a month-long artist residency by the Prairie Center of the Arts in Peoria, Illinois. In 2011, she completed her M.F.A. from Brooklyn College, City University of New York. She has exhibited in solo, group, and juried shows all over the northeast and beyond, been published in journals such as JAZZIZ and The Brooklyn Review, and sold to private collectors. Through dissolving forms, broken lines, overlapping narratives, and layered repetition, Julia’s work addresses the density and fragility of urban life and its connections to obsolescence, music, and social psychology. She approach issues of renewal and decay, fascinated with the big city’s relentless success, the small city’s relentless struggle, and the accumulating intensity that buzz throughout both. She celebrates obsolete media objects as vessels for memory and culturally loaded structural elements whose lost content echoes into the present. Her intention is to capture contradictory moments of beauty, confusion, intimacy, isolation, and the sprawling electricity of human interaction and memory.
